Welcome to the Terrorchid Wiki, Dokuwiki of the Month Januari 2008
The wiki has been installed as part of the terrorchid.org domain to make life a little bit easier for everyone who is participating in bringing together info on terrestrial orchids. The content can be altered by visitors without registration. To achieve this we keep a log of changes to avoid abuse and spamming.
The wiki basically contains 2 types of data: lists and texts. The lists can be links, books, genera, … you name it. In the old forum I had to update the HTML files manually and then upload them - which is a bit of a hassle when it has to be done on a dayly base. The texts are forum topics that are distilled in easy to read content. A forum collects a great deal of interesting information, but finding everything is not always an easy task.
Below you'll find the pointers to the main wiki categories. You're free to alter, add and read. If you're a new user, read our guidelines to the syntax. You can experiment in the playground to get used to the wiki environment.
During the past few years, we've received a large number of external pages related to Terrestrial Orchids, most of them from enthousiasts who want to share their obsession. Data on this subject on the internet is very fragmented and often very specific.
There are two ways of adding your homepage or a suggestion; you can insert your link directly in the database or post it on the forum. The full List may be slow to load, so they're split up in categories for low-bandwidth connections:
……..Photography
……..Data
……..Commercial
……..Societies
……..Personal
In addition to this we have a large number of links suggested by our forum members
The terrorchid.org domain is built around the concept of gathering data concerning terrestrial orchid culture and conservation, the collected data emphasises for most of the content on growing these orchids. To create an overview in this topic we split them up in different categories.
Terrestrial Orchid Genera lists the data for all terrestrial orchid genera and provides data on validity and synonyms on genus level. For each genus you'll find the data collected so far or a template that is ready to filled in by growers that want to share their experience. There are a number of databases that store validity of species within each genus - data provided by the International Plant Names Index, Kew Royal Botanical Gardens and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. This data is gathered on regular intervals, processed and presented per genus. Each genus contains data such as general culture, specific culture per genus, a flowering calendar, in vtro experiences, pollinators and hybridisation data. Because we rely on voluntary contributions you'll find that not all fields are filled in for each genus yet, anyone can contribute.
Mycorrhiza Genera provides the same data but viewed from the perspective of the mycorrhizal fungus. Known and suspected partnerships are collected per genus of fungi and links to publications are mandatory. In the mycorrhiza culture page you'll find an introduction to cultivating these fungi so they can be applied for orchid seed germination.
Terrestrial Orchid Diseases will try to provide a comprehensive text on ailments and how to prevent or cure them. The amount of variations among terrestrial orchid habitats is reflected in the extent of vulnerability of their genera in culture. Each disease contains information on measures in whole or specific for certain plants.
Our database has tools that are made available to be used on other webpages using links, the look and feel can be changed with css to fit on your webpage. Below each tool is the URL (http://... thing) for use on your website + a demo.
The validity checker is a tool developed to format validity of a genus and its species.
